interesting lines about love

I've been reading 'The Journey' by Jiro Osaragi. It's about post-war life in Japan. Finished this part where Segi-san finds out about Sutekichi's love for Taeko. Found these lines below interesting. Hmmph...
".....The spirit of thieves and pickpockets seem to have spread in the world. But a person in love should never want to get something out of it. It musn't be a matter of working out one's accounts. If one is lucky enough to find a real partner, one should simply recognize in the fact and not be looking for some advantage beyond it. There's something rather filthy, isn't there, about the spirit of collusion one so often sees between young couples? To fall in love....well, love you see isn't a thing that can be undertaken by just anyone. In the first place you have to be prepared for it. And in so far as you love someone, you have to be yourself. If love is like that, it elevates the spirit of human being. And after that even if the love should fail in some way, there will never be any cause for regret. But when love is being sold bit by bit - well one might just as well go to bed with a streetwalker...."
